  1. I really enjoyed you using Poetry for your presentation! I have actually JUST recently started enjoying poetry myself (reading and writing) Never really thought that day would come, but I have expanded my horizons and now know that poetry doesn't always have to rhyme or be in a specific format! I absolutely LOVED your version of the poem and could definitely be ok with you being in charge of the world ;) you made it pretty easy!! Great presentation and I liked your creative idea to make the poem into your own! Nice work!

  2. This is a great topic to ponder... Always fun to think about the changes both serious and fun that you would like to make in the world. It gives us a license to dream. I too like that you made your own version of the poem. The free lattes is a definite winner with me!!

  3. Make it free iced coffee and I am game. :) I like your presentation! I am inspired by your ambition to write your own version of this poem. Kudos to you, nice work. I need to jump into poetry more. It is something that I have dabbled in from time to time, but I should aquaint myself better. Thanks for sharing this poem! It would be a great one for students to make their own too. You certainly would see some great creativity!

  4. Mindy, I finally found a computer with sound! :) I really enjoyed your presentation. I think the best part was making your own version of it. Poetry is often times very personal and so highly adaptable. When we write our own poems, and share them with our students, I think it really helps for them to see us as a person on many different levels. They can see what we're thinking; they can hear us read them aloud; they realize we are writers too. I think that part gets lost sometimes and we're just seen as "work givers" and they don't get to see us ENJOYING the process of reading and writing. It's such an important thing to model!! Thanks for reminding us all of that!!

  5. Great presentation! I really enjoy poetry and it's always fun to hear new ones, especially when they are created by fellow classmates or students. I also think this poem would be a wonderful example for students to use an inspiration for their own poems. This poem has a serious and a fun side. It is a great way to get students to think about changes they would like to make in the world, whether they're for the good of all or just for fun.

  6. Hi Mindy, watched it and loved it. You’re like a genius. I mean I wish I could have thought of this! How simple and yet so powerful. Illustrating the poem in a PowerPoint is a wonderful idea for helping kids with comprehension and understanding lots of things about poetry and texts in general. This particular poem is PERFECT for the kids you work with, who so grapple with issues of control. Here they have control – even of the text by manipulating it to express meaning in their own way. They can then make their own poem as you did. Being able to show them your version is a powerful model.

  7. Thanks Mindy for sharing your GREAT presentation with us! I loved hearing a new poem and learning a new way to bring poetry into the classroom. Having students mimic another poem with their own words and then being able to put it into a PowerPoint to share with others!

  8. Mindy! That was so awesome! I LOVED BOTH POEMS! What a great pick for this time of year! Your poem made my day! I felt like you created your poem for me... haha we have so much in common! I think what you did would be a great way for children to relate to poetry!

    Great work Mindy!

  10. I LIKE it, Mindy.
Don't we all wanna be in charge--or even sometimes think we are. Both versions were good ways to relate how we really are, no matter how good we might be at putting up that polished facade.

I'm still a little afraid of poetry, though I've got some closet favorites. Not ready to write any yet, but who knows...

  11. Nice job Mindy! I liked how you rewrote the poem to fit you. I think it would be a great idea to use the same format and have the students write "If I where in Charge of the World" poems. I LOVE doing poetry with children. It is really cool how even small children can come up with some beautiful words. I'm going to remember this poem to use in my future classes. Thank you!
